The Mayor’s ‘Money Can’t Buy’ Virtual Auction will be conducted online, safely away from the coronavirus.
The Mayor of Barnet’s 1920’s-themed Gala Dinner, scheduled for Saturday 25th April 2020, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus. All tickets had been sold and the event was expected to bring the current Mayor’s Appeal to a spectacular conclusion. This was not to be – and a major rethink was needed.
So the Mayor and her committee have come up with a solution – with your help they can steer disadvantage into advantage by turning this Gala Dinner into a virtual fundraising event online. In this way, they are still looking to meet their original Gala Dinner target to raise £10,000 for Cherry Lodge Cancer Care and Home-Start Barnet.
The Mayor and her committee are now asking Gala Dinner ticket holders to consider alternatives to simply asking for a refund (although this option is available, see foot of page). Note that the Mayor’s Virtual Auction is also open to people who haven’t previously bought Gala Dinner tickets.
Supporters might also like to enter the Mayor’s Virtual Raffle or make a donation to the Mayor’s Appeal (details below).
‘Money Can’t Buy’ Virtual Auction Draw
The Auction Draw will be held on the evening of 25th April 2020, when the Gala Dinner was to have taken place. An online video link will be set up to allow participants and spectators to remain safe in their own homes. For logistical reasons during the lockdown, the Auction Draw will be made by Cllr Caroline Stock (Mayor of Barnet). Speeches will be made by Clive Coleman (Legal Correspondent at the BBC), who was to have been the guest speaker at the Gala Dinner, and by James Kennedy (Chief Financial Officer at Middlesex University). A brochure for the evening will be distributed after the event.
To take part, Gala Dinner ticket holders are being asked to donate their original ticket price of £65 (for one chance) or £130 (for two chances) to win some novel prizes, including:
- Operate the machinery to open Tower Bridge.
- Enjoy lunch for two by invitation of Christopher Hayward, Sheriff of the City of London, with HM Judges at The Old Bailey.
- Fulfil childhood dreams with a private viewing of the Jubilee Line control tower and experience a simulator drive of the tube.
- Take tea for two at the House of Commons
- Go subterranean with a special trip to the secret ‘Mushroom Farm’ beneath the London Underground.
- Quaff a bottle of ‘John Bercow’ Single Malt Whisky, signed by John Bercow and no longer on sale!
The original ticket price of £65 gives you entry into the Mayor’s Virtual Auction Draw with more than a 1 in 100 chance of winning a fantastic prize!
