This Indian-themed evening, held during the Hindu festival of Diwali, was a new and very enjoyable fundraising venture for Cherry Lodge Cancer Care. On Saturday 29th October 2016, Bollywood came to Mary Immaculate and St Peter’s church hall in Somerset Road, New Barnet!
Under the expert guidance of members of the professional dance company Bollywood Vibes, nearly 50 people, including 10 children, learned some intricate moves and had a marvellous time, which could not have been bettered by the Strictly Come Dancing experience a few miles down the road in Elstree!
An initial demonstration by the professional dancers was followed by a dance workshop culminating in an informal dance-off between those sitting on each side of the room. A non participant acted as judge and the winning side was clearly delighted with the result. Meanwhile the other side harboured no ill feelings as this friendly competition was all part of this fabulous, fun-filled evening. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights and a really exotic atmosphere was created in the hall by the placing of flickering lights on the floor.
The excellent Indian food, provided by Tandoori Nights Cockfosters, was evidently much appreciated as many people came back for second helpings. The children were separately provided with chicken and chips!
After supper, the professional dancers gave another skilled performance before leaving to celebrate Diwali with their families. This was a well organised and enjoyable evening. As usual Cherry Lodge thanks everybody for supporting the charity and also the ever-obliging volunteers for helping out.
