On 3rd June 2015, some 150 people, including more than a few with connections to Cherry Lodge, attended ‘A Night to Remember’ – a wonderful evening of fashion organised and funded by John Lewis in aid of Sunflower Cancer Support.
The Sunflower Cancer Support group exists to provide information and support to people with cancer, and their families, living in the west of the borough of Barnet (Burnt Oak, Edgware, Colindale, West Hendon) and surrounding areas. Kirsty Mabb, Outreach Nurse from Cherry Lodge, has worked with this group, from its inception four years ago, and it is now a fully fledged, independent support group, with its own Trustees.
Following the success of last year’s Sunflower Charity Fashion Show, also organised and funded by John Lewis, it was decided that the 2015 event would be held in memory of Lea Carroll. With his wife Julia, Lea was a very active member of Sunflower Cancer Support and of Cherry Lodge. Sadly, he died in March 2015.
For all who attended, 3rd June 2015 really was ‘A Night to Remember’. Loud applause accompanied all those brave enough to parade some very stunning fashion items, from smart casual to seriously chic, on the improvised catwalk. Most of the models were Sunflower and/or Cherry Lodge members. Although this must have been a particularly daunting event to have planned, Julia and her fellow models did a splendid job.
At the end of the evening, John Lewis handed a cheque for £1,200 to Sunflower Cancer Support, a flourishing, self-supporting, self-financing group of very dedicated people.
The Sunflower Group meets every second Tuesday, from 7 pm to 9 pm, at The Anunciation Parish Centre, 4 Thirleby Road, Burnt Oak, HA8 0HQ.
