There is no doubt at all that Cherry Lodge Cancer Care quizzes are getting better and better! If proof of this is needed, our 2018 Spring Quiz sold out within days of being first advertised. (The date of our Autumn Quiz is already fixed for 8th September.)
On Saturday 5th May 2018, at the start of a glorious Bank Holiday weekend, the church hall of Mary Immaculate and St Peter’s in New Barnet was packed with over 90 people (and a dog called Tag). Precisely at 7.30pm, quiz master David Southon took the microphone and explained the procedure for the evening (photo 1, below). This included reminding people of the No Mobile Phones rule – and none was spotted.
There were 10 rounds of six questions each, including popular quiz topics like art (Doménikos Theotokópoulos is better known as?… of course, El Greco), sport, countries (2nd largest by area; 4th largest by population) and animals. There were also intriguing rounds on doctors (known for achievements outside their medical practice, including W.G. Grace and Anton Chekhov) and Elizabeths (non-royal ones, including the 2012 London Olympics winner at the Uneven Bars – gymnast Beth Tweddle).
An excellent supper of fish and chips or a vegetarian alternative was served half way through the evening. This gave quizzers an opportunity to eat, chat and concentrate on identifying 60 pictures of Famous Duos, people called John, Celebrity Chefs and Birds (mainly cartoon characters). A feeble performance at this activity was the downfall of at least one team!
The quiz was won by table 3, headed by Debbie P (see photo 7, below). Their excellent performance was marked by the awarding of large chocolate bars (see photo, below). The lowest-scoring team received the now traditional loo rolls for coming bottom – but had the good sense to hide their identity by concealing the offending items before the photographer got to them!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, even for those who felt they might have done better at answering the questions. Huge thanks, as always, to David, Maureen and Dawn Southon – our quiz family!
Special thanks also to Tina as events coordinator and her team of volunteers, smartly dressed in their bright blue Cherry Lodge polo shirts. One group, who wished to remain anonymous, posed with their backs towards the camera. Meanwhile, there were others who were still busy working behind the scenes!
