In the run up to the 2017 Borehamwood Families Day, we were told by Terry Forster, assistant manager of Cherry Lodge Cancer Care’s Borehamwood charity shop, that this is a day that she always really looks forward to – and with good reason!
This year’s event, part of the Elstree & Borehamwood Civic Festival, was held at Meadow Park on 1st July and proved as popular as ever. Cherry Lodge Cancer Care was one of the many charities that took part, all hoping to raise money and increase public awareness of their work. Cherry Lodge had not only an exciting tombola stall but also an extra table selling various items such as jewellery, hats and sunglasses. Both these stalls were ‘manned’ by Terry and her band of cheerful, smiling shop volunteers. Unlike last year (when a small fortune could have been made by the sale of umbrellas), the weather was very pleasant.
The emphasis of this popular family event is not just on children but also on animals. There was a huge assortment of pet dogs to be seen as well as an impressive array of toy animals of all sizes and colours, which people had either bought or won at the Zoo Stall. Featured in the programme of events were dance and acrobatic displays, Theatre Club Kids, the over 50s Burlesque Group, The Joseph Peace Fire Stunt Show and the Air Cadets Band. There were also plenty of other activities, such as judo, bungee jumping, measure your sprinting speed, a little merry-go-round, and the ever-fascinating creation of huge soap bubbles. The many food stalls and ice cream sellers did a roaring trade and ensured there was no need for folk to go hungry.
