Alexander Technique (suspended)
The Alexander Technique is a powerful aid to personal development, self-awareness and acquiring new skills. By improving balance, posture and coordination, it increases efficiency in daily life and helps people cope with stress and physical problems. The special value of the Alexander Technique for people diagnosed with cancer is that it enables them to make the best possible use of whatever energy they have.
How can I learn the technique?
Just a few lessons can make a big difference to personal well-being. At Cherry Lodge, we offer members a course of eight one-to-one lessons with our specialist Alexander Technique teacher. Each lesson lasts just under an hour. You are advised to wear loose clothing for lessons as this will be more comfortable when you move around and lie down. You will also be asked to take off your shoes.
The teacher will use gentle hands-on guidance and verbal explanations to help you find ease and balance within yourself when performing simple movements and everyday activities, such as sitting, standing, walking or bending. Through experience and observation, you will gain increased awareness and learn to function more efficiently.
Rather than blocking off practice periods in addition to their lessons, students are encouraged to bring the Alexander Technique into every part of their daily life.
How does it work?
The Alexander Technique will enable you to replace long-standing, unhelpful postural habits with more efficient and harmonious ones. By enabling tightly held muscle groups to relax, the technique can boost performance in any activity and provide relief from the kind of tension and ‘holding’ that result from fear, pain and illness.
In time, you will be able to use your new understanding and skill in more complex and demanding activities. It will be possible for you to bring awareness and poise to everything you do.
