Despite the disappointing weather, Barnet Museum’s ‘Tea in the Park’ on Sunday 12th June 2016 was very well attended and greatly enjoyed. This is an annual, free event put on by Barnet Museum to celebrate the area’s heritage and to develop public awareness of Barnet’s place in history.
The afternoon began with a lively performance by Barnet U3A’s Ukelele Maestros. This well-established group played some excellent tunes, during which the very appreciative spectators had to contend with some unwelcome showers (see photo 1, below).
The highlight for many supporters of Cherry Lodge was the first public performance this year by the Cherry Lodge Singers, now under the leadership of Simon Wilsher (see photo 4, below). Their programme was extremely well received – especially as the sun came out after their tuneful rendition of songs like ‘Singing in the Rain’, ‘Bring me Sunshine’, and ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’.
Appropriately attired re-enactors brought history to life with demonstrations of medieval fighting techniques as well as some more peaceful everyday activities. There was also an interesting update from Sam Wilson, the archaeologist leading the investigation into the site of the Battle of Barnet. Children had a great time using their artistic talents to make decorative shields – and people of all ages enjoyed the cakes!
Despite modern-day parliamentarians being hugely preoccupied with the forthcoming referendum, our MP and Cherry Lodge Patron, the Rt. Hon. Theresa Villiers managed to find time to join the audience.
