The BBC weather forecast for Cherry Lodge Cancer Care’s Walk and Stall event in Barnet’s Oakhill Park on 2nd April 2023 was not exactly accurate. Instead of warm and sunny, the morning was decidedly chilly and grey. Despite this, around thirty members and supporters of CL came along to the park to enjoy each other’s company, to walk together and/or gather around the CL stall to buy attractive seasonal merchandise and delicious cakes.
Some twenty plus walkers and their canine companions, along with CL chairman Margaret, joined in the walk, taking care to avoid the very muddy patches and flooded areas. Nobody skidded or fell, and despite the lack of sun, the sight of some magnificent spring blossom cheered us all.
Sales at the merchandise stall were brisk. Pens and keyring torches bearing the CL logo are always popular. There were also many items kindly donated by Hobbycraft, including an attractive range of very good value magazines with great tips for people interested in crafts like quilting and embroidery. With Easter fast approaching, knitted chicks containing a chocolate egg flew off the table. CL volunteer bakers Bobbi and Sue had been up early that morning to produce a fantastic array of gorgeous cup cakes. These sold very well, in fact like hot cakes, even though some people commented that selling hot soup might have been more appropriate.
Entertainment was provided by vocalist Colton Clarke who had been encouraged by one of our volunteers to do some amazingly tap-inducing Elvis songs. These went down particularly well with some of our very young visitors, who simply couldn’t stay still! Thank you Colton, having you there really added something extra.
Thanks to everybody who braved the cold and supported this event. As always, thanks to Tina and her merry band of volunteers. Sales on the day raised an impressive £343, supplemented by some extremely generous donations that took the event total to a fantastic £2,120.
