Member's Experience - Fred & Linda

In January 2007 I left hospital and was handed over to the care of the Hospice and the Macmillan nurses. Understandably I felt a bit low. However this turned out to be the beginning rather than the end of the story.

Whilst going in and out of both the Hospice and hospital on a regular basis for treatment it became apparent that there was still some life in me, and to quote a consultant I had FTD (failed to die). At which point I dropped off the medical professionals’ radar, which left my wife and I feeling very isolated coping with my illness.

A friend and member then introduced me to Cherry Lodge to meet with Fiona, this was certainly a turning point for me (I’m not sure it was for Fiona.)

I have always been sceptical about complementary therapies but after receiving treatments I became a complete convert. I have had so much care and attention from the staff and volunteers that words cannot begin to say how grateful I am.

Fred

When Fred was first discharged from hospital with a poor prognosis I changed from being a wife to becoming a carer, which has been very difficult for us both.

Fred had been going to Cherry Lodge for nearly a year when he suggested that I went along with him.

At first I felt uncomfortable as I thought the resources were for those with cancer, however I was soon reassured that they were there for me as well.

When you are caring for someone, everything naturally is centred on their wellbeing, and the family’s needs are often forgotten, so being introduced to Cherry Lodge was wonderful. For the first time since Fred had become ill I felt that I was being cared for as well.

Fred and I now go together on a regular basis and have found that everyone we have met at Cherry Lodge has made us feel welcome. The treatments really help and equally important is the care shown by all the staff and volunteers.
